The term „cameo“ is not that well known to many people. It refers to a (more or less) hidden guest appearance by stars in films where they are not considered part of the cast. Usually these cameo appearances have a funny edge to them, in that they satirically ridicule the actor in question or even the entire film. The lines are blurred there of course. Is it still a cameo appearance when stars show up „as themselves“ in a film? Or what if you know a celebrity from a very different context, such as in the case of Alanis Morissette who plays God in Dogma?
Regardless of how you define it, we viewers always enjoy these brief comical appearances. If we actually notice them, that is! Because sometimes they’re so short you’d think the star in question just happened to turn up on the film set and was spontaneously asked to appear as an extra.
